Struggling to maintain standards, Kuni's was for many years the place to go for Japanese in Melbourne. The dining room is smarter now than it has been at times, with comfort and clean Japanese lines giving the place a sense of authenticity.

The authenticity fades as the food comes out. The dishes do not represent the freshness or portion size one might expect, or may have experienced in the past. On my last visit, timing was also questionable as an entree arrived at the same time as a main. The sushi is 'just over the line,' not the best place for sushi to be.

The service is okay, even though it's hard to get across to some of the staff. The food is just okay, and the overall experience leaves one a bit empty. Other Japanese places have got better as Kuni's doesn't quite do it for me these days.

Maybe worth a visit, but not strongly recommended.
