Member Review by melbourne_muncherSubmitted November, 2005 The Watergrill is one of those restaurants that always seems to slip under the review radar and I’m never quite sure why. There are plenty of inferior restaurants reviewed in popular restaurant review publications but The Watergrill never gets a look in which often baffles me. The Watergrill is an elegant, smart restaurant with a strong emphasis on seafood. The menu is divided into categories such as ‘From the Oyster Bar’, ‘Seafood Platters’, ‘Chargrilled’ ‘Mussel Pots’ as well as the usual entrees, mains and sides. The last time I visited the experience was a bit disappointing with a few service slip-ups but I still love this place.
On our last visit I ordered a cold crab san choi bau ($22) which was fresh and zingy with small slivers of pickled ginger through it, and my partner ordered tempura king prawns ($26) with a fantastic crispy batter. My main was a serving of salt and pepper squid ($28) which were delicious- served with a scattering of fiery chillies and my partner chose his all time favourite- flounder in brown butter sauce. Although he was very happy with the taste and quality of this dish the usual serve of one whole large fish was replaced by two smaller ones without explanation.
We ordered a bottle of T’Gallant Pinot Gris (around $50) from the comprehensive wine list which was poured without the offer of a tasting- one of the few service disappointments of the night. All in all our last visit was not as good as our many other visits but the Watergrill is still a firm favourite in my book- one of those places that I daydream about eating at on a regular basis.
