100% Please note: The reviews below are more than 12 months old. Member Review by pjqacksonSubmitted November, 2007 Great value and great food - The only criticism is that they should ask what you want with your main ie. veggies or salad, and should not charge you $5 for the salad that is meant to be included in the main...Still, it was such good value that one can overlook that.
A bit of attitude from one of the waiters, but maybe he was having a bad day ... Member Review by GarySubmitted October, 2005 Old-fashioned hospitality dominates in this cosy restaurant kept busy by locals. A few tables outside work well. Inside, wood-dominated walls and tables provide a hospitable and authentic atmosphere. Some of the menu is 'Aussie-Italian' while other dishes reek of authenticity - especially the excellent house-made gnocchi... with no holding back on quantity.
A workable wine - list for a place at this price range is complemented by a 'BYO wine' tag which enables us to bring in a big old red to go with steaks or the meat pasta dishes, or a special white to accompany dishes like the pasta with clams, garlic prawns or daily fish. The very good coffee can be supplemented with a grappa or liqueur if it takes your fancy!
Mains are around $10 - $25 with little need for side dishes.
You'll be welcome, and you won't leave hungry. Highly recommended for couples and small groups. We're among the many regulars. Member Review by Kelly NeilsonSubmitted April, 2005 You are welcomed at the door of South Yarra Trattoria by the same waiter every time, always with a happy smile and a welcome. The atmosphere is warm and friendly and the air is always filled with the aroma of the delicious foods this restaurant has to offer.
The menu is extensive and contains plenty of choice. Although many items have no description, the waiter is always happy to interpret. The wine list is also extensive and contains many nice Italian wines, as well as local varieties.
The fare is Italian, hearty and always in generous serves, some dishes seem to be secret recipes handed down over generations. I admit, I always find myself drawn to the same dishes at this restaurant, but there is something to suit every taste. If you want anything changed in a menu item, they are more than happy to oblige.
Some of the menu items I have seen range from braised rabbit, to crepes, to some wonderful seafood risottos with plenty of fresh seafood and amazingly tasty home made tortellini with a blue cheese sauce. A good hint when ordering pasta, it always comes in heaps on your plate. I would suggest ordering an entr?e sized pasta.
For the serving sizes, the food is priced very well. You can expect to pay about $7 to $22 for a main meal, with most entr?e sized pastas priced at $8. My partner and I visit the Trattoria as often as we can and come away about $40 lighter, for a meal, garlic or herb bread and a few drinks each.
Highly recommended.
