Kanpai is good Japanese. It's cafe-style, so if you're a couple the next table for two might be within 10 centimetres... as a slightly larger-than average Aussie I can find that a bit obtrusive.

The sushi is reliable...never a dud... but still doesn't quite have that 100% 'I am fresh and irresistable' edge that a top-class Japanese place presents (see my review of Kenzan... a different league). The other typical Japanese style teriyaki or noodle based dishes are good too.

There are some good buys on the wine list. In the Kanpai style of place, some would let me bring in a better bottle than they have on offer. The wine list gets by, as does the service... but then some folks are happy to have beer with a Japanese meal.

It all adds up to reasonable value for reliable, okay food- for a meal not a night out. If you really want to have a conversation and stay for a couple of hours think again. This place is good, and very popular, and it can be very noisy and cramped. If that's your thing, go for it.
