Toto's Pizza House
Pizza/PastaLicenced
101 Lygon Street
CARLTON 3053

Frank Fera opened the first pizzeria in Australia in 1961 and Melbourne's culinary landscape was changed forever. We now see the aftermath in almost every suburb around Australia as it is now impossible to find an urban area without a local pizza store. In 1982, the Fera's sold Toto's to the Mazloum family, who have been operating it ever since, keeping the traditional atmosphere of the place and an attention to quality and service standards.

Overwhelmingly friendly service almost assaulted me as I walked into Toto's, making me slightly suspicious of what their effervescence was hiding. My feelings were a little misguided however, as my standard pizza was quite good and was served very quickly.

At first I felt the base was a little too thin, but the quality toppings, texture and taste of the pizza as a whole made up for this. My penchant for thick base pizzas however is probably making me a little too subjective and pedantic.

Toto's is worth a visit for the traditional environment, bragging rights to say you've eaten at the first pizza restaurant in the country, and the fact that the food is not that bad at all.

What a shocker! We order a bottle of wine and out it comes, already opened, with glasses drippping with water. 'We can do better than that, can't we' I suggest, and the corrective action is the waitress wiping our glasses dry with the paper serviettes off the table, commenting that there are no tea-towels.

Supposedly a 'pizza institution,' the pizza base at Toto's was undoubtedly the worst I have had out - still dough in the center, with toppings that rate at the very bottom-end of what is available. Seriously, I have had better from a supermarket freezer. The overpriced - and ordinary - salad, dressed with an oil that was NOT olive, didn't help much.

We decided to stay on for coffee regardless. I asked for an amaretto with my coffee, noticing a couple of bottles of the stuff on the shelf. 'We don't have amaretto,' I was told. I asked the 'manager', who said, we 'don't have amaretto.' I asked him to explain what was in 'those bottles,' whereupon I was advised they had obviously made a mistake! 'Hey, we've got amaretto,'I was told. The drink came in a dry glass, and thye coffee was fine.

With the abundance of local competition this place is a puzzle. Maybe it was just a bad (Sunday) night; the breaking glasses in the background may have attested to a singular bad night. But strangely, the people running the place were very anxious to let us know what great operators hey were... hey, we were almost priveleged to be there. 'Never again' for me, Toto's is trading off a name that is wearing out. Not recommended.
