Member Review by HenrySubmitted May, 2006 After many failed attempts to secure a reservation at Abla's I was very excited when I rang and was told that they could fit me in for a table of two. This is a restaurant well worth a visit but reservations made well in advance, particularly for a Friday or Saturday night are an absolute must!!
We opted for the set banquet which at $45 per head seemed very reasonably priced. Initially we wanted the banquet with the fish option but when we spoke to the wait staff (and it was clearly marked on the menu) this was not available as Abla orders her fish in daily depending on her requirements (hence the requirement to advise them if you want the fish option at the time of booking).
The table was set with some large tasty olives and some beetroot coloured pickled turnip which was not only a bit unique but very tasty. The banquet itself commenced with an arrangement of three dips which not only tasted wonderful but were presented on the table beautifully. There was plenty of lovely flat bread to spread the dip over and it was thoroughly enjoyed.
All the dishes presented were interesting, very delicious, and obviously very lovingly prepared by the kitchen staff. There was an assortment from chicken pilaf to lovely sausages, marinated chicken wings and the homemade turkish delight was just magnificent. The waiting staff were very courteous and readily available to answer any questions.
My first experience at Abla's will definitely not be my last and I will be ringing them well in advance in the future to ensure I get a reservation!!! Member Review by Kate Dal FornoSubmitted April, 2005 Ablas is a Melbourne institution. From the first baby dish of dip to the final plate of chicken pilaf, each little dish is a premium example of what good lebanese food should be like. I always go really slow and small through the middle courses knowing just how good that final dish is -- and that others will be already brimming from the sausage, kebab, salads etc. to even attempt the pilaf.....you have been warned.
Abla herself is often on hand in the restaurant, even after over 30 years, and might indulge you by signing a copy of her excellent cookbook.
For birthdays etc the set menu (about $40 last visit) is fantastic (no squabbling over bills) as is the BYO idea. Conveniently tucked away from the main drag of Carlton shops... you probably couldn't fit the gelati in anyway!
Book well ahead. Member Review by Danny SegmanSubmitted September, 2004 Hard to get in but well worth the wait...Reservations are a must for weekends but this traditional restaurant has everything you would expect and more. Have been here several times and would go again and again.
Easy to find just near the corner of Elgin and Rathdowne Street Carlton Reviews are opinions of the author and do not represent the views of FoodGod Victoria, Neolux Communications, or its employees, contractors or supporters. If you have any queries, please contact us.
