I had often considered dining out at Stokehouse in St Kilda but for some reason or another always ended up at a different dining establishment. Last night I finally got to sample the upstairs restaurant at Stokehouse and was very pleased with the experience. The setting was very good with a nice open dining area and plenty of room between diners to allow for conversation without feeling overcrowded. The wait staff were knowledgeable and the service was very good. I was a bit surprised at the number of dishes available on the menu combined with the specials menu which would have been twice as much choice as is generally available on other restaurant menus.

I started off with an entree of buffalo mozzeralla followed up with a coral trout dish off the specials menu. The meal was excellent and the fish in particular was prepared and presented beautifully. I was pleased we ordered a side dish of potatoes though as the meals were served with minimal accompanying vegetables or sides (in the case of the fish there was a small serving of mashed potato).

As a party of three diners we were all pleased with our meals and the restaurant in general. The food was of a high calibre and the staff were knowledgeable and attentive. The serving sizes were a bit on the small side but then again, perhaps I have a healthier appetite than others? The wine list was extensive and very impressive and overall I would rate the restaurant as an 8 out of 10. Value for money was reasonable and I will be returning, altough next time it will be in the summer when I can look out over the bay instead of the darkness which is all one can see in the middle of a Melbourne winter.

I tend to agreee with jacqui---overrated. Great location but pretty much "pub" food

People tend to rave about the Stokehouse, however I was disappointed. To pay $18 for fish and chips, but to have to line up to give my order was very unfortunate. If I am paying that much money I expect table service. The food was nice and the waiters were friendly, but it was a bistro atmosphere with a pretentious price tag.
