Member Review by b47tbaumSubmitted August, 2008 I was one of 22 in a group on a Monday evening. The prices are reasonable, especially for the CBD, and the food was good but nothing special in the Melbourne market. Starters are $10-12, mains high $20s to high $30s, sweets $12.
The service - a mix of being tactfully ignored French-style with lengthy waits between visits by the server, with the comment not to be confused as being part of the expected delays serving a large party, to a very well done to the cook and staff for getting 22 starters, meals, and sweets out with commendable synchronization per course - but unexpectedly long wait between courses. When the main server was around, he was good.
The bread was very good, and served with sufficient butter so requests for more were not necessary. I chose the onion soup - very good; steak frites ordered medium rare to rare and cooked closer to medium (many establishments have done far worse) - the chips were OK; the chocolate fondant special was really good, as were all the sweets as reported by the other diners.
The wine list is decent and typically priced for the CBD. All cards. Over the years there have been many comments about the Bergerac being hit and miss. The night was not a bulls eye, but neither a miss. What would a French restaurant be with consistent and attentive service? Member Review by GarySubmitted June, 2008 As soon as Bergerac picks up a bit it falls on its face. The most recent visit saw a service crew in the dining room I had never seen before. I was told that I had not booked, as the only booking for two was in a different name. Empty tables were everywhere. I cannot recall being treated so rudely in a restaurant, as the guy in charge insisted I was wrong and not them, like he would prefer a solid argument to a customer. Just when I was becoming a bit of a regular! I can't recommend a place like this - the lack of service standards is so poor. When previously there the service was patchy, but the food was good. Serves are a good size and generally well prepared.
The dining room is different, with walls cluttered with curios and empty bottles. If you're looking for something a little different, and French, and you want a reasonably quiet place where you can have a conversation, you may be game to take your chances with the service. But it's not recommended. I won't return. Historical Review by GarySubmitted June, 2008 Bergerac can get some things really right, and it's getting far better at making fewer mistakes as our last few visits have been more than positive. Excellent pate, salmon entree, duck, lamb, veal... with a reasonable wine list and an ability to BYO. The staff - generally Frendh - are attentive. Serves are a good size and generally well prepared.
The dining room is different, with walls cluttered with curios and empty bottles. We are becoming regulars. If you're looking for something a little different, and French, and you want a reasonably quiet place where you can have a conversation, check it out. Well worth a visit.
