A truly Australian experience that all Melburnians should try.

It is not the sort of restaurant you would expect to see on Lygon Street, but it is certainly a very good place to visit. Not only is the food very Australian, from kangaroo to shark steaks, but the atmosphere is certainly outback Australian.

The seats are very comfortable, made from hessian sacks and the walls and ceilings all from Australian timber.

If I can make one recommendation, you have to visit Tjanabi to try their sticky date pudding. It cannot be beaten!

There's the great interior decorating. The potato sacks on the chairs. The uber-outback (and a little weird) upstairs toilet. The friendly and professional service. All of these are reasons why you should try Flamin' Bull, but the reason why you must try it is, the FOOD.

If all that sounds like an advertisement, let me assure you I have no affiliation with the restaurant; it's just that Flamin' Bull served up the best food I've ever eaten in Melbourne. Given that I ate with a reasonably large group of people, I got to try most things on the menu, from the kangaroo tail soup to the crocodile to the pavlova. Standouts were a heavenly pate with toasted bread, the emu sausages (served with sweet potato mash) and the sticky date pudding.

All items on the menu are made on the premises and it really shows. The only thing that could be faulted was the speed of the service (but apparently the head chef was not working on the night that I ate so maybe that explains it).

Nevertheless, Flamin' Bull really is a cut above. They've created a truly Australian dining experience. Whatever 'modern Australian' is, it pales in comparison.
