People come here for the food, and even on Wednesday night, the place was packed. Shuffling upstairs, and taking our seats, we partook in the free tea as we contemplated the menu. Camy Shanghai is renowned for its dumplings, so these were a given, specifically Fried Beef Dumplings and Steamed Pork Dumplings. Then Dan-Dan Noodles, which while spicy, presented some strange flavours that I'm still not sure I liked. Chicken Rice, and Spring Rolls were also brought to the table to complete the feast. Dipping sauce (which appeared to be a combination of Soya Sauce and Chilli) was abundant and added a bit of zing. Every dish here (expect perhaps the Dan-Dan) was delicious, and filling up three people, the grand total of the bill was $27.
So, how do they keep the prices low? No ceramic. Hard plastic was the material of choice for the plates, bowls, cups and chopsticks. Tables are laminated, and the chairs are padded, vinyl covered numbers. Don't let this put you off though, as this actually added to the comfortable, completely unpretentious ambience. Camy is ideal for having a chat with friends over a good meal, and at the prices they charge, no-one will be disappointed. Member Review by pipSubmitted August, 2006 You are always guaranteed that Camy Shanghai will be busy - no matter what time of the day or night you go ... to me a sign of a good place to eat!
The decor is very plain and simple - nothing flash about this place at all - plastic mugs that you fill yourself with chinese tea and you grab your own cutlery and dipping sauces - but the dumplings are what this place is famous for ...
You can get dumplings in various fillings pork, vegetarian, beef, chicken)and cooking styles (steamed or fried). My favourite are the pork fried dumplings :)
You can not usually finish a whole serve yourself as you get 10 to a plate ... but so tasty and yummy.
To be honest - have not really tried any of the other dishes (noodle or dumpling soups and other regular shanghai inspired dishes) they have on offer -> they have specials on the walls - some are translated into english but they are mostly in chinese ... so unless you can read ...
Great value for money as you always roll out feeling full to the brim and never spend more than $20 for two people. Popular with both students and the general public ... a good place to go for yummy dumpling!
