My most recent visit saw some of the potential returning to an excellent place to relax over a meal. I hadn't been there for over a year and this time we were more than happy. If linen tablecloths, silverware, carpet and well-draped windows are to your taste, this is probably the place in Melbourne to visit with your partner or small group for an evening you won't forget. It's an elegant room with a special feeling.
Recent years have been patchy but it appears that some standards and finesse have returned to a dining room that should be done justice with food and service that has not always reached the mark in recent years. 111 is getting close to being excellent all round, but then 'good' is becoming relatively 'very good' in a segment of the industry that is lacking, more so with the loss of Langton's which used to be nearby.
You will pay a lot more for lesser food and wine in Melbourne. The menu and wine list are reasonably short, but provide something for everyone. On our last visit, my wife had the salmon for an entree and loved it. My 'three way duck' was excellent as an entree; as was the steak and the old-fashioned bearnaise sauce - all cooked to perfection with a serve of vegetables second to none for quality, fitting garnishes and quantity. Our desserts were just over the line for quality, but then a reasonably well-priced wine list with a skilled waiter who looked after us very well made up for it. If there is a down-side it's the trek to the basement to the toilets. We had an excellent evening with all dishes perfectly timed for a leisurely, but by no means slow, dining experience.
If you enjoy a few glasses of wine with your meal and order three courses you will do well with quality Australian produce at prices that are hard to match in Melbourne. On recent experience, you are also likely to leave feeling well satisfied, very comfortable, having had no cause for stress. Recommended!
