Stalactites
177-183 Lonsdale Street MELBOURNE 3000
|
|
Stalactites is well positioned on the corner of Lonsdale and Russell Streets, smack bang in the middle of Melbourne's Greek precinct. The first thing as you walk through the door is the waiting area for the take-away food. This area is never empty for long. The restuarant are is off to the left hand side and this is where the unique decor comes into its own. The roof is like the inside of a cave, with roughly rendered finish and thousands of...you guessed it... stalactites coming down from the ceiling. The tables are simple and the seats comfortable. A function room is available upstairs.
Just as a bit of trivia, stalactites was the first restaurant in Melbourne to open its doors 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and it seems to have proved to be a successful strategy with other restaurants following suit, such as Chapelli's in South Yarra.

100% Please note: The reviews below are more than 12 months old. Member Review by Guy MartinSubmitted October, 2009 YUM! I would have to say that Stalactites lives up to its reputation for great Souvlakis. Immaculately clean premises with delicious smells permeating throughout increases the anxious wait for tender lamb or chicken (I had both) with fresh lettuce, tomato and the standard Tzatsiki sauce (Garlic, Cucumber and Yoghurt). If you are willing to wait for about 10 minutes, the Athenian Souvlaki has some of the tastiest meat I've had. Can it get any better? Well, if you are ever feeling hunger strike at 4am on a Monday Morning, Stalactites will be there to sate it, and sate it with flavour.
Oh, there's also a sit down restaurant section with a more extensive menu than what is on the takeaway menu, and the coffee is excellent. These are facts that pale against the $7 wonder that is a takeaway Stalactites Souva' though. Member Review by Danny SegmanSubmitted April, 2004 Best Souvlaki in Melbourne by a greek mile !!
If you prefer a sit down meal they also have some tables and an extensive menu of Greek delights. Reviews are opinions of the author and do not represent the views of FoodGod Victoria, Neolux Communications, or its employees, contractors or supporters. If you have any queries, please contact us.
