Member Review by DhiSubmitted October, 2007 If you are looking for a good family pub meal in Yarraville then you can't go past the Yarravile Club! Well actually you can.. the club is not located in the main cluster of eateries in Yarraville, but is still only a few paces around the corner from the east end of Anderson Street.
The Yarraville Club was founded more than a century ago and has been based in Stephen Street since 1910! Since the facility is still a Club in the traditional sense, one must sign in at the doors before entering. The atmosphere is distinctly Australian pub. The venue flaunts three bars, a gaming room, a dedicated entertainment area, a pool room with some of the largest billiards tables you will ever see, and of course the restaurant.
The restaurant is called Cuming's Cafe - named after James Cuming who was responsible for building the Club premises almost a century ago and on whose land the club still stands. My wife and I seem to find ourselves in here once a week, sitting in one of the booths along the back wall, and having long drawn conversations about everything. The waiting staff are friendly and the service is excellent. To the point that they remember which bottle of red wine we prefer and where we usually like to sit. Just little things that make you feel good after a long day at work.
The food is surprisingly sensational. You don't always expect something special in pub meals but head chef Shane Smith definitely has something special going on. The presentation is excellent and the taste is consistent. The menu selection is not the largest but what is on offer is well picked. My favourites include the Korma Curry with a refreshing spring onion garnish, and even the good old Chicken Schnitzel with a light batter that is not too overpowering.
Like us, if you find that you haunt the place regularly you might wish to consider membership. The annual fee is nominal (and membership is subject to approval by the board) but gives amongst other things a 10% discount on food for you and your guest. My wife and I have had many a meals at the Club for $40.. and that is including the bottle of wine!
