Aix Cafe Creperie Salon
Cafe
24 Centre Place
MELBOURNE 3000

Aix epitomises Centre Place. A diminutive cafe with tables just big enough to fit a plate, the salt and pepper grinders, and a bowl of coffee sugar crystals, it stands out by not standing out. The raison d'etre for Aix is to serve high quality food, with a focus on crepes, and there is a wide variety of fillings. From the classic lemon and sugar, to Tandoori chicken, Peking Duck and Apple and Cinnamon, crepes turn into all day fare.
For something different, try the blood orange juice, or mix it with the mandarin juice to take away some of the bite. If you'd rather something hot, you can get Grinders coffee, or one of the many organic, pesticide-free teas on offer. With a seasonal menu, all food made from scratch (nothing out of a box) and meals catering to vegetarians and coeliacs (people with a gluten intolerance), Cafe Aix has something for everyone.

One of the best tasting omelettes I've had, and the fantastic service made Cafe Aix a pleasurable eating experience. While the omelette was not as big as some other places, it more than made up for it by being absolutely delicious. This is definitely a case of quality over quantity. I followed this up with a lemon/sugar crepe, and was not disappointed. Some blood orange juice and I was overly satisfied.

The coffee was quite good, and going by the number of people that came here specifically for coffee, I'd say that this was the rule, and not the exception.

Service was excellent, and any questions about the food were greeted with enthusiastic replies, and offers of samples. On this day, there was nothing over $7.30 on the menu which made it very enticing to try new things. My meal was not on the menu, but the staff was all to happy to make it for me.

One thing I found rather unique was the choice of spoons and saucers. The spoons that you see in souvenir stores are not kept in the plastic boxes, but brought out and actually used as spoons, and the saucers are all differently patterned. Just one of those touches that made me think, for a fleeting second, that I was not in Melbourne, but in a back street of Paris, especially with the environment of Centre Place.

Definitely one cafe to put on the "must try" list.
