Member Review by aduki MagazineSubmitted November, 2006 This delightful haunt is undoubtedly one of the best value-for-money vegetarian eateries in Melbourne. A mere $6 will see your belly satisfied with traditional southern Indian cuisine. So what do you get for your $6? Well, you have a choice. You can try the masaladosa, a delicious lentil pancake filled with a spicy potato mix accompanied by two dipping sauces: spicy coconut and tomato chutney– both fantastically aromatic.
Forget cutlery, this meal is best eaten with your hand…the right one of course. Alternatively, $6 will also get you a ‘lunch special’ that consists of rice, dhal, pappadams and two types of curry. These change each day featuring varieties from vegatble to chickpea to beetroot. The surprise is part of the fun. Lime rice is another tasty option consisting of basmati rice seasoned with fenugreek, split peas, cashews and lemon juice. And guess what? It’s $6! In a warmer on the counter the entrees are plentiful, ranging from $1-2. Most of the menu is vegan, unless ghee or yoghurt is specified in the description. If you’re unsure, the friendly staff are happy to help.
The service is quick; you order and pay at the counter. Staff will bring you water and your food, but grab your own cutlery from the counter if you need it. It should be said that this is probably not the best place to take a romantic date or arrange a lengthy dinner with friends. With its peeling paint and plastic tables, the small eatery would certainly benefit from a renovation. Despite the somewhat bleak façade, the food more than makes up for it. Fresh and authentic cooking makes this one of the best Indian outlets in town.
