Hairy Canary

Probably better known as a bar, than a restaurant, Hairy Canary made its mark as one of those places you find either by accident, or by being told by friends. Food is available until closing time (which is 3am during the week) and is slightly offbeat. Imagine a potato chip and gorgonzola pizza, if you can. Close to the Regent and Athenaeum theatres and almost smack bang in the middle of the city, its convenience and reputation make it worth a visit.

The kitchen is open for meals until closing time, which is a welcome relief for anyone working late shifts or just wanting a little more than a caravan kebab after a night on the town.
Service was fast and efficient, but considering we waited for a table at 11:30pm, the lack of overwhelming friendliness could be explained away by how busy everything was. Interesting considering most other places close their kitchens between 9 and 11pm.
The pizzas that arrived after the short wait from ordering were excellent. Fresh ingredients, cooked perfectly and matched to each other by an obviously talented chef. Roast Chicken, Eggplant, Tomato and Basil on top of a crisp turkish style base went down very well, as did the Chorizo, Feta, and Napoli pizza my counterpart ordered.
The bill was a pleasant surprise (I never look at prices first, something I have to work on) and allowed room for a reasonable tip. Hairy Canary is not the place for quiet dinner conversation, but if you want to round out a good day with good food and a busy vibe, it's worth stopping by. Member Review by DennisSubmitted February, 2005 I really liked Hairy Canary when they had their old menu. They have recently updated the menu and all of my friends agreed that it was quite poor value for money.
The servings were quite small, especially being charged $4 or so for a mini can of soft drink! It has a wonderful atmosphere but they should bring back the old menu!
The staff also could make a larger effort to make their patrons feel welcome. Reviews are opinions of the author and do not represent the views of FoodGod Victoria, Neolux Communications, or its employees, contractors or supporters. If you have any queries, please contact us.
