Tucked out of the way in Ballarat St, Yarraville, Bopha Devi is the most perfect pre or post-movie bowl of noodles known to the suburbs. Cambonian in origin, the funky restaurant set up seats only 30 (book for goodness sake) with about 8-10 being accomodated on a communal table. Service is good - knowledgable and also groovy. They even told me where to shop for the wonderful Japanese roasted rice green tea which they serve.
We love the chicken balls, the sping onion pancake and the fish cakes here, but once you've moved past the appetisers you must try the traditional Cambodian fare: rice noodle soup, braised kroeung beef strips with lime leaves, lemongrass and turmeric or the beef with ginger (about 200gms of it!!) which has so much flavour it knocks you over. Some of the dishes have a strong nod in the direction of Vietnam so if you're not accustomed to Cambodia you will be at home all the same.
Treat it like an adventure from the city - the train station is 20 metres from the theatre and on Mon/Tues night the tickets are cheap and they allow wine in the cinemas (plenty of leg room too). During the colder winter months, you could easily glance down the street and think you are in Europe.
