Member Review by Owen ProudfootSubmitted September, 2006 This venue has been a favourite of mine for years, so I feel obliged to provide my opinion on it... Like any good Japanese restaurant, they succeed in creating a tranquil/ relaxing atmosphere in which to enjoy the experience. The joint is not 'jam-packed' with too many tables (often a problem that I find in busier parts of Melbourne), the lighting is 'comfortably dim' but not too dark, and the music is very subtle, just loud enough to block out back-ground noise from other tables. If there was an 'overall atmosphere' rating available here at the 'GFG' website, I'd give them 'excellent' for this.
For food quality, I give them excellent. There is no better test of a restaurant's food quality or 'standards' than the texture, aroma and taste of their sashimi (raw fish), which is what I always order at Japanese places. These guys pass this test with flying colours; what arrives is a good variety (and quantity) of different fish, beautifully presented, and very fresh. Notably, I have also been to Shinjuku with others that ordered different dishes, and all were impressively presented and (from their reports) great tasting.
I've found the 'service' in Japanese restaurants tends to be very efficient and polite regardless of which one you're at, and Shinjuku is no exception in my many experiences, so that too gets an 'excellent'.
These guys definitely offer a service/ food that is good value for money. I will continue to go back, and advise you to check it out if you like very reasonably priced great quality Japanese food in a comfortable atmosphere.
