The New York Tavern
| Modern Australian | Licenced |
525 Collins Street MELBOURNE 3000

This 160 year old, 2 storey bluestone building formerly housing the York Butter Factory lies in the shadow of the monolithic Rialto Towers. Now with an emphasis on good pub fare and with plenty of space for functions and group bookings, the historical environment, and a location next to one of Melbourne's top attractions, the New York Tavern is steadily attracting repeat business for lunch, and growing the patronage over dinner.

100% This venue changed management in October, 2009. Please note: The reviews below are more than 12 months old. Member Review by BBGSubmitted November, 2005 CR's is built in a wonderful old building with sub-walls not fully covering the stone original, and a view of the roof substructure. In contrast the chairs were upholstered in a green fabric, and the sub-walls were white which inferred more of a subtle oriental ambiance than that of a steak house. The original building parts screamed for a proper steak house designer to have a go. Numerous prints on the walls were appropriate, but unable to overcome the overall feel.
We were promptly greeted and seated, arriving on the leading edge of dinner. The wine list was good and fairly priced, with a selection of Grange vintages included. We chose the 2003 Buckshot shiraz which lived up to its tasting notes and reviews. A part loaf of tasty hot bread was served. Things were going well, indeed.
Starting with the oysters kilpatrick things began to slip. There was a dearth of worcestershire sauce and general blandness in comparison to most we have had. The asparagas stack entree was well presented and tasty, although both the oysters and asparagas were served warm rather than hot, which could be our personal bias.
Mains included a surf n turf and a filet mignon. Both were cooked on the rare side of medium rare, exactly as ordered. Accompanying baked potatoes mimiced the American baked russet through a sour cream and bacon bits topping - they were excellent, as was the salad with a flavourful dressing.
For sweets we tried the creme brulee -- excellent, and the ice cream which was creamy and well received.
Service was unobtrusive and prompt at all times, including periodic checks. Overall we left as happy diners, although the oysters were a let down in comparison to the remainder of the meal. For the price range there are a number of establishments that have it together a bit better, hence the 7 rating.
