Grind in the City
Cafe
4 Centre Place
MELBOURNE 3000

You could almost call Grind an alcove. It's a tiny cafe tucked away in Centre Place which stands out due to it bright colours and the smell of coffee. There's just enough space to seat eight people in a bar like manner, but it's not so claustrophobic with a mirrors tiled on the ceiling. Looking up, there is also a wide gap in the ceiling which looks through to the bar above via a reinforced glass floor. Due to this, the fairer sex should probably not wear low-cut tops at lunch.
Grind not only strives to serve the best coffee possible, but also provides a wide variety of fillings in Turkish Pide, English Muffins, in addition to the standard fare of cakes.

Grind in the City, located in the oft-cramped surrounds of Centre Place, does a good job of relieving some of the claustrophobia by providing brightly coloured walls, a mirrored ceiling, and bar seating.

While location and atmosphere are both arguably important, it was in some of the other areas that Grind really excelled. The service was friendly and efficient, and the coffee (Lavazza) was great. What really stood out though, was the Hot Chocolate which I decided to have on a whim. The barista, who incidentally is also the owner, appeared sincerely delighted when I ordered this, that delight passing over to me when one of the most beautifully presented hot chocolates I ever seen was laid on the bar in front of me. This was an artwork, that deserved to be drunk and re-ordered just to make sure it wasn't a once off.

If it is delicious, decadent, hot chocolate you want, Grind is the place to go out of your way to get it.
