100% Please note: The reviews below are more than 12 months old. Member Review by GarySubmitted March, 2008 Not all it's cracked up to be these days, Matteo's is riding on a reputation which makes it one of the few Melbourne restaurants that distinguishes itself with a fine and individual cuisine.
The East-west touches, employing some interesting flavour combinations, have varying success - such as with the 'oyster combination' entree in which a different garnish for each oyster adds up to an overall dish that equals 'flavour wars' and a question on taste. The quality of ingredients carries the day - including excellent seafoods, wagyu entree steak, beef, game and vegetables at mains time. Sauces are perhaps not as pure and well-defined as they have been in the past.
The wine list is reasonably priced and international. A shortage of quality offerings of white showed through at our last visit. Does Matteo have something against riesling? Quality and reasonably priced champagne offerings save the day!
Most disappointing is that a place like Matteo's with an excellent dining room and waiters who know quality service sends runners out, slapping main course dishes on the table five minutes after the entrees are finished. Our waiter was just as disgusted as we were, grateful only that we didn't send them back.
Matteo's is increasingly difficult to go back to or to recommend. Time to brush up the act, Matteo's.
Member Review by Mike AllisonSubmitted May, 2007 Our experience of Matteo's was the Mothers Day special, but one of our group confirmed the style of food was similar to other days. The waiters were attentive and helpful. The food was distinguished by great combinations of flavours, well presented and just the right quantity. Ambiance clearly stated quality. Parking is not easy at this venue.
